How to Plan the Perfect Tropical Dive Trip Without Breaking the Bank

Every diver wants to see as much of the world as possible. That’s a fairly large part of the motivation to dive, we believe—to see new things, to be a part of scenes you would never see in any other scenario. We’d all love to take tropical dive trips, but how do we afford it?

There’s no one definitive answer to that question, but if you keep the following tips in mind, you should be able to get the best possible deal for yourself.

Look for group deals, or negotiate a group rate

You’d be surprised the number of outfits, both big and small, that are willing to make a deal with you to help land a bigger group of ticket purchasers. If you can get a group of people who are willing to join you on your tropical dive trips, there’s a very good chance that you or someone in your group would be able to successfully negotiate a more affordable group rate for your trip.

Keep in mind that the more people you can get together, the more affordable your trip will be. But also remember that you probably want to make sure everyone in the group is around the same skill level, as you don’t want to get hamstrung by having to stick to dives that are within a much weaker diver’s ability.

Subscribe to airline alerts for your favored location

Subscribing to airline alerts to your preferred diving location can help you get the best deal possible. The best deals often appear and disappear with no announcement whatsoever, but if you’re paying attention, it’s not uncommon for these deals to save you as much as 50 percent on your travel costs. In addition, subscribe to the mailing lists of some diving and expedition companies, as their personal newsletters are often where they offer the best deals on travel. This is a great tactic for pulling off a tropical dive trip on the cheap!

Look for travel packages rather than planning and purchasing trips piecemeal

Here is a vastly underused strategy for saving money on travel! Airlines, travel agencies and diving and adventure agencies often offer bundled travel packages where you can save by combining your travel, lodging, diving, rental car and food plans into one bill.

Travel during off-peak months

Another great way of traveling affordably is to try to travel during off-peak months. People take trips to the tropics all year round, because the weather is perfect all year round. But when you travel outside of the peak months—the months when people typically have vacation or when they’re taking spring, fall, winter or summer break from school—you can expect to save 10 to 15 percent right off the top of your travel.
