SSI Deep Diver Course

Looking for wrecks or dive sites beyond 60? Do you want a more extensive knowledge of diving theory and how to plan and execute deeper dives? There’s a lot of fun and a lot to be seen in the 60-130′ deep diver range.

Mention a “deep dive” amid a group of divers and watch their reactions. Novice divers who have yet to venture below 60 feet want to know what it’s like. More experienced divers who have been a bit deeper chatter with excitement. Those who have trained to prepare themselves to venture to 130 feet (the recommended deepest limit of recreational diving), show enthusiasm tempered with respect for the serious nature of safe deeper diving. At any rate, there’s certainly something a bit alluring, exciting and mysterious about going “deep”.

Course Highlights
The purpose of the SSI Deep Diver Course is to familiarize divers with the skills, knowledge, planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems, hazards and enjoyment of diving between the depths of 60 and 130 feet. The SSI Deep Diver Course is intended to serve as a safe, supervised introduction to deeper diving within the limits of recreational diving. The course includes one evening academic session, one pool orientation session (as needed) and a minimum of two open water dives.

We cover:
Deep diving activities and objectives, deep diving definition and limits, developing your personal deep diving depth limit, deep diving equipment and techniques, breathing techniques for deeper diving, anti-silting techniques, nitrogen narcosis, decompression sickness and recompression chamber overview, examining pressure-affected objects and recording color changes at depth, practicing navigation at depth, and practicing using emergency breathing equipment.

The course is intended to be fun while exposing the Deep Divers to proper dive planning. Our goal is for you to be able to plan a dive between 60′-130′ and execute that dive with a minimum of risk.
It is highly recommended you have a Nitrox certification prior to this class. Nitrox, or Enriched Air, provides the diver with the optimum breathing mix at the target depth. Nitrox helps reduce exposure to excessive amounts of nitrogen and may increase dive time. You can add Nitrox training to your Deep Diver course and complete both courses at the same time.

Instructional Equipment:
Students will receive access to the SSI Deep Diver on-line materials.
